With the help of generous donors, sponsors, and participants, Aiming for a Cure has successfully raised over $315,000 in four years for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital through Children’s Miracle Network with specific gift designations to:

  • Research – We support researchers at the University of Iowa that are investigating new and better ways of treating cancer in children. To date we have supported four major research projects by awarding $160,000 to four investigators at the University of Iowa. Each year proposals for research projects are solicited and reviewed by a scientific advisory board thought the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. In 2007 a total of $100,000 was awarded to two investigators for their work on brain tumors and neuroblastoma.
  • Patient Care – We provide support for children undergoing cancer treatment at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital when insurance coverage is not adequate to cover costs. We have also purchased new equipment and furnishings in patient rooms.
  • Families of children undergoing cancer treatmen t – We provide a stipend to each family with a child having a bone marrow transplant, which is to be used for unreimbursed expenses during their prolonged transplant stay. Families are also given gas cards to help offset the cost of frequent clinic visits and given grocery cards when they have lengthy hospital stays. Any family with a child receiving cancer treatment at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital that demonstrates financial need is given assistance to help with expenses. $5,000 is allocated each year for a monitored shopping spree for toys for the children receiving cancer treatment. To do this shopping spree, we select a cancer patient & family to purchase items for the inpatient units and to be given for special events, such as birthdays.
